About the NHK Symphony Orchestra Singapore Concert to Commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Singapore-Japan Diplomatic Relations

In April 2026, the NHK Symphony Orchestra will perform in Singapore for the first time in 24 years to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Japan and Singapore. Over the years, Japan and Singapore have fostered friendship, and at this turning point, we hope to contribute to further deepening the bilateral cultural exchange.
The program of the concert consists of a wide variety of works, including Yuzo Toyama’s Divertimento for Orchestra composed in 1963, featuring a medley of folk songs from many parts of Japan, and Four Seas Interlude from Peter Grimes, a masterpiece of Benjamin Britten who marks the 50th anniversary of his death, a suitable piece for Singapore, a city-state surrounded by beautiful seas.
Conducted by Tatsuya Shimono, one of Japan’s foremost conductors, who was appointed Permanent Conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 2023, and featuring Kyohei Sorita as piano soloist, who won the second prize of the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition, and has continued to perform popularly on the international stage, the NHK Symphony Orchestra will deliver a powerful performance.
The concert, which will be held at Esplanade, Singapore’s premier cultural hub, will surely become a very special evening event for classical music fans of Asia. We hope you will look forward to the NHK Symphony Orchestra Singapore Concert.
