Artists

Matthias Bamert* ConductorMatthias Bamert*

The Swiss conductor, Matthias Bamert, studied music in his native Switzerland, as well as in Darmstadt and Paris. He began his conducting career in the United States with such ensembles as the Cleveland Orchestra.
Posts include Music Director of the Swiss Radio Orchestra and London Mozart Players, Chief Conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Principal Conductor of Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra, and Deputy Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Most recently he was Chief Conductor of the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra from 2018 to 2024.
He has made numerous guest appearances with orchestras in Europe, the USA and Asia, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Orchestre de Paris, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and London Philharmonic Orchestra, amongst others.
Although Matthias Bamert has a solid reputation as a conductor of the standard repertory, he is best known for his work on behalf of new music, obscure eighteenth century music, and neglected music from all eras.
He first appeared with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 2000, conducting a program of contemporary music in the “Music Tomorrow” concert, and since then he has given outstanding performances in repertoire ranging from Mozart to Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and contemporary music.
