[Obituary] Wolfgang Sawallisch: Regarding Honorary Conductor Laureate’s death

NHK Symphony Orchestra Honorary Conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch passed away on February 22, 2013, at age 89.


Sawallisch was like a father to the NHK Symphony Orchestra and his passion continually nurtured its development up to the present. His death follows shortly on the heels of a New Year’s message that he was “I am so proud to be your Honorary Conductor Laureate”.


We would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to his lifetime achievements and offer our sincerest condolences.

Wolfgang Sawallisch

Sawallisch was born in 1923 in Munich. In November 1964, he first performed in the NHK Symphony Orhcestra subscription concerts. In 1967, he was appointed Honorary Conductor, and in 1994, Honorary Conductor Laureate, conducting fine performances mainly of German symphonies. His last performance was Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 in November 2004.
