Announcing the new season of subscription programs – September 2019 to June 2020

The lineup of subscription concert programs for the 2019-20 season (September 2019 to June 2020) has been finalized. As always, we will present good grade substantial programs unique to the NHK Symphony Orchestra together with the world’s greatest conductors and soloists.

Paavo Järvi, who will celebrate his 5th year as Chief Conductor, will appear in September, February and May. In the first concert to start the season, he will present an ambitious program of works by Polish composers, as well as his usual repertoire of works that he takes up with the NHK Symphony Orchestra including those of Bruckner, Mahler, R. Strauss, Rakhmaninoff, Sibelius and Shostakovich throughout the season. With Mr. Järvi at the baton, the performance of the Orchestra is sure to be heightened.

Herbert Blomstedt, Honorary Conductor Emeritus, who will stand on the podium in November, will present German and Austrian quintessential masterpieces such as Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor. Furthermore, programs by guest conductors that should not be missed include Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4 by Tugan Sokhiev (October), Mahler Symphony No.2 Resurrection by Christoph Eschenbach (January), R. Strauss Ein Heldenleben by Fabio Luisi (January), Leonard Slatkin, with a program that will mark the 120th anniversary of Copland’s birth / the 30th anniversary of his death, (April) and Mahler Symphony No.9 by Kent Nagano, who will appear for the first time with the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
