Josef Strauss (1827 - 1870)

“Delirien”, waltz op.212 (8')

The waltz Delirien (Delirium) was composed by Josef Strauss for the Medical Students’ Ball held in Vienna on January 22, 1867. Immediately after its premiere, the piano reduction of the piece was published. The edition was dedicated to the medical students at the University of Vienna. The waltz Delirien begins with a brief introduction, which is rather different from that of a typical Viennese waltz. It lacks a clear thematic statement or easily recognizable melody. Instead, the section sounds as if the orchestra is mimicking dramatic scenes from operas or ballets.
