NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo

No.1910 Subscription (Program C)

Kazuki Yamada will appear with the NHK Symphony Orchestra for the third time since 2016, when he conducted Program A of the orchestra’s January subscription concert. What sets him apart from other conductors are his masterful technique, unwavering confidence and challenging spirit, driven by his mission to incorporate what he has learned from his predecessors into his own music, while at the same time transcending traditional teacher-student boundaries and cultural differences. On some occasions, he calls himself Yamakazu 21, declaring himself an indirect successor to Kazuo Yamada, the greatest Japanese conductor and composer of the 20th century, who was nicknamed Yamakazu. Even before his professional debut, Kazuki Yamada made great strides towards his objective of making Western music take root in the context of Japanese culture. With such a spirit, he has expanded his repertoire through numerous performances, and gained the support of Japanese audiences. Such a hands-on approach has reached a level which is now being recognized as an international standard. Since 2012, he has served as Principal Guest Conductor to the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra in Monaco, and in 2016, he became Artistic and Music Director of the latter. In the 2018/19 season, he assumed the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Having reached the age of 40 in January 2019, he has spread his musical wings from a genius in Japan to a maestro of the world.

[Takuo Ikeda, music critic]
