Tatsuya Shimono was born in Kagoshima in 1969, and after graduating from Kagoshima University’s Music Division of the Faculty of Education, he studied conducting at the Music Department of Toho Gakuen College, the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena and the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. In 2000, he won first prize at the Tokyo International Music Competition for Conducting, and won first prize at the the Besançon International Music Festival in 2001. He served as Resident Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, while guest-conducting orchestras overseas including the Czech Philharmonic and the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Presently, he is serving as General Music Director of the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Hiroshima Wind Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra. He is a professor at the Kyoto City University of Arts, which fosters young artists.

Since 2005, he has often worked with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and introduced Martinů’s Memorial to Lidice and Karel Husa’s Music for Prague 1968 in its subscription concert in January 2017, and in its October subscription series in the same year, he conducted Berg’s Violin Concerto together with Lulu-Suite. He always provides stimulating programs. On this occasion, he will challenge Weinberg’s Symphony No. 12 “In Memory of Shostakovich.
