Czech-born Jakub Hrůša is presently Chief Conductor of the Bamberg Symphony, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra, London and the Czech Philharmonic. He was born in 1981, and after studying conducting under Jiří Bělohlávek at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, he served as Music Director and Chief Conductor of Prague Philharmonia from 2009 to 2015. In 2011, British music magazine Gramophone named him one of the world’s ten young conductors who have before them a stellar future.
He has since expanded his activities internationally, by guest-conducting major European and American orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, and in October 2018, he made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker. He served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra from 2010 to 2018, performing a multifarious repertoire including Czech works, his forte. He has also been highly evaluated as a conductor of operatic works, appearing at Glyndebourne Festival Opera on a regular basis as well as guest-conducting the Wiener Staatsoper and the Opéra National de Paris. This is his first collaboration with the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
