Tugan Sokhiev was born in Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia, in 1977. He was one of the last students of Ilya Musin, a prominent teacher, at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, and after Musin’s death, he studied conducting under Yuri Temirkanov. He became Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestre national de Capitole de Toulouse in 2005, and three years later he became Music Director, a position he holds to this day. He was also Music Director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO Berlin) from 2012 to 2016, and he has been Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre since 2014. He has been continually guest-conducting to great acclaim world renowned orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra, while at the same time working on his operatic repertoire at the Metropolitan Opera House and the Mariinsky Theatre as well as at the Festival International d’Art Lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence. After his first collaboration with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in October 2008, he returned to the podium in November 2013, in January and October 2016, and in November 2017.
